At any time of year there are Fêtes and Festivals of interest to all tastes, whether they be historic or gastronomic, quaint rural customs or cultural highlights. As a taster, February starts at Bazas, with the ‘Fête of the fattened cows' and continues in April in Sadirac with the Fête, “Oh! The forgotten vegetables”!!! The former dating from the Middle Ages whilst the latter tempts you with nettle soup or a cocktail of “loves in a cage”! whatever they are?
May brings the “Fête of the flower” at Montagne Saint Emillion with flowers and wine honouring the initiation of well known people into the ‘Wine Brotherhood of Saint Emillion'. Also, in Saint Emillion, there is “Open Day” when the Chateaux of the area open their cellars to all to taste the famous vintages of this medieval town.
June sees the opening of the “Girondin summer” with numerous shows, plays, exhibitions, songs, dances, concerts, light & sound shows through to September. National music day takes place on the 21st and the village of Begles hosts “Les Feux de Garonne” all along the river and it's banks with boats, plays and “son et lumiere”.
In July, nearby Monsegur holds a non-stop Jazz festival “24 Hours of Swing” in the cafés, streets and under the central hall of the Bastide. For the more combative, Castillon holds “The Battle of Castillon” in July and August, which is a historical reconstruction of the battle that marked the end of the Hundred Year war with England .
August and September see the World Surf Championships along the coast at Lacanau and Biarritz or for a more leisurely pursuit, Saint Emillion has it's “Proclamation of the Harvest” with the procession of the ‘Jurade', the Wine Brotherhood of Saint Emillion. A solemn mass is also held in the collegial church on top of the King's Tower. There is also a wine festival and Hot Air Balloon launch in Duras, not to be missed! See the slide-show below.
These are just a few events picked from the crowded diary, those most accessible during your stay at Le Manoir du Cèdre will be highlighted on your arrival.
